Why do essential oils work? What is the reasoning behind how essential oils work?

In The Chemistry of Essential Oils Part 1 we discussed the first category of essential oils- Terpene Hydrocarbons. If you have not read that, please read it first. In this part we will discuss the second category- Oxygenated Compounds.

Understanding that each essential oil has its very own specific chemical make-up is crucial to understanding why that oil offers so many diverse health benefits. When we understand these things, we can know better how they work with our own personal chemical make-up. If you are new to essential oils, you have to get this.

One important thing to remember is that the chemistry information in this post and the remainder of the essential oil chemistry post is based on clinical studies, scientific studies and experimental research. Not all of these studies have been conducted on humans. There is a lot of potential for cures and treatments as found in these highly documents studies. Hopefully someday, we can find cure for cancer and other diseases based on this research.

Please note that the components of essential oils can be recreated in a laboratory but even scientists are aware that they are not nearly as effective as when they are in their whole, complete, and natural state. These studies are also done often while isolating one single component. Essential oils have hundreds or thousands of these chemical compounds in one oil. God knew what he was doing when he put them all together. Therefore, most constituents work as a team as are far more effective when working together in their natural state…in essential oils. To learn more about essential oils for natural remedies, click here.

Although there are cautions based on some components in this studies, the claims often come from overdose of or consumption of essential oils. The only deaths that have ever been reported from essential oils come from internal consumption in large quantities, usually in children. Children should never consume essential oils. Adults should not consume essential oils regularly or in more than small doses. For more information on this check out, “Is It Safe to Use Essential Oils Internally? What Do The Experts Say?” Therefore keep these cautions in mind as you use your essential oils. Click here to learn more and to help you understand safe use of essential oils.

The quality, purity and way the plants are grown is of the utmost importance when using essential oils for medicinal and therapeutic benefits.  These factors decide how potent the oils are and if they really work or not. That is why there is only one company I will ever trust with my families health. They make sure every aspect of their oils are the best quality available…in the entire world.

Phenoles (Fee-nalls)

There are two types of phenols. In this post we are talking about phenols that are a class of organic compounds not the toxic phenols used in DNA extraction. They are very different.

Phenolic compounds are very high in antioxidants. Antioxidants help repair oxidative stress damage done by free radicals. Phenoles are your go to for antioxidant constituents.

Phenoles are the go to for all things bacteria and viral. Most of the chemical compounds we have discussed contain at lease some sort of antibacterial/antimicrobial properties BUT they are usually most effective at Gram-Negative Bacteria.

Phenoles are exceptional in this department because they can penetrate the most resistant of pathogens called Gram-Positive Bacteria which have a much more defensive cell membrane than Gram-Negative Bacteria.

Gram-Positive Bacteria are usually pretty strong against treatments including some of the discussed chemical consituents BUT phenoles can penetrae the cell wall of Gram-Positive bacteria and destroy them. This is a task that even the strongest antibiotics have trouble doing.

Phenoles work best when paired together. Each of them have amazing power against bacteria and virus in themselves BUT they take different routes to dispose of them. When paired together, they can attack from different angles.

Constituents in this category always end with an “ol” like the ol in phenOLe. Below, we will go over a few of the most popular phenoles.

Eugenol (You-gen-ol)

Eugenol improves potency of other chemical compounds. Eugenol is the go to for fighting strong pathogens. It is very very highly-

Antimicrobial

Antiviral

Antibacterial

Eugenol is a VERY strong antibacterial, even stronger than antibiotics. One study showed it completely destroyed salmonella within 60 minutes of treatment. It kills bacteria that causes E. Coli, staph, MRSA, cold sores, Shingles, colds, flu and pneumonia. It also It has proven to kill bacteria that has become antibiotic resistant! Eugenol literally changes the cell membrane of bacteria and changes the chemistry of it! It changes the fatty acid content of bacteria.

Antifungal

Eugenol is used to treat all types of fungal infections all throughout history and still today. Research show it is just as effective as nystatin in treating fungal infections like yeast found anywhere in your body. It treats ear infections, thrush, and cold sores with powerful intensity and kills the pathogens that cause it.

Antiparisitic

Antioxidant

It contains a higher concentration of antioxidants that most of the well known antioxidant fruits.

Antibacterial

Menthol is used in over the counter and prescription medications for common cold, flu and similar illnesses. It can also be as effective as antibiotics.

Antiviral

Antifungal

Anti-Cancer

Although research is still in it’s beginning stages for this: Menthol has shown high potential in supplementing cancer treatments because it activates some of the same neural receptors that cancer has.

Antimicrobial

Anti-Spasmodic

It relaxes muscles, especially the intestinal muscles to prevent painful spasms.

Digestive

People have used menthol for thousands of years to ease digestive issues like stomach aches, nausea, indigestion, colic, heartburn, GERD, bloating and gas pains. This is especially helpful for those who suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It is well known to absorb into the lower GI Tract (small and large intestine) where much of the digestive upset comes from.
It does this by relaxing the intestinal muscles and blocking high amounts of calcium that enter the smooth muscles. When ingested, alcohols (menthol) (including the drinks) are not digested. Instead, they pass through the stomach to our intestines where they are absorbed directly into our blood stream. Menthol also acts as an appetite suppressant by helping us not overeat and curbs our sugar cravings.

Respiratory

It has many respiratory benefits by opening your bronchi and helping you breathe easier. It can relieve bronchitis, colds, flu and even asthma. It is found commonly in cold medicines, cough drops, chest and nasal congestion remedies and other medication for common ailments.
