How I Got Started Using Essential Oils from the eyes of a Skeptic

Are essential oils a scam?

I, Old Soul Mama used to be an essential oil hater!

I didn’t want anything to do with essential oils, period. Here is my story of how I used to be, not only a complete skeptic but an anti-essential oils advocate.

My journey began a few years ago now. I was a foster parent for 3 little boys all under the age of 3, plus my own 2 daughters. Yeah, that’s a lot of kids. I was having some major issues with diaper rash and yeast infections after I had just taken a placement of a 2-year-old boy who was suffering from severe neglect.

It was so bad, he was found eating dirty Cheetos off the floor when Child Protective Services had come for him. He had the worst diaper rash I had ever seen. His entire bottom was bleeding and covered with open, raised sores. He had to walk like a penguin to relieve his pain. He also was not circumcised so his foreskin tore open and was infected due to feces being trapped inside it. I cannot even truly explain what it was like, just picture the worst diaper rash you could imagine…then times it by 10. It was that bad. He not only had a diaper rash, he had yeast infections in every crevice he had. It was horrendous.

Nothing thing was working to clear his rash fast enough. I tried everything including every rash cream on the market. It just kept getting worse and worse. I even spent $1000 and bought myself a huge stash of cloth diapers (which I love by the way) and began to use those instead of the chemical filled disposables thinking that may be the problem. I had already tried all different brand of disposables too. I even spent a few hours making my own cloth wipes to match my new diapers.

It finally dawned on me that those creams were never going to help him at all because they were full of disgusting chemicals. In the world today, you don’t really know that there are safe, effective alternatives out there unless YOU go looking for them specifically. The world doesn’t usually advertise the natural remedies that there are. (I’m talking the real true natural remedies not the ones who claim to be all natural but are in fact full of chemicals.)

Most people just go to the grocery store and pick something out, without much thought. They may try to choose a healthy choice but are easily confused or persuaded by the labels full of false advertisements. Products that claim to be all natural yet are sprayed heavily with pesticides.

Essential Oils from the Grocery Store

I decided to google, “Natural remedies for diaper rash.” As I researched, I ran into a recipe for homemade wipe spray that claimed to heal, soothe the pain of and prevent diaper rash. I was so excited to find something I haven’t tried before! It went perfectly with my new cloth wipes. The recipe called for lavender, frankincense and tea tree essential oils. I had heard of those essential oils before but didn’t really know what they were. I was shocked when I saw that the price of one little tiny bottle of frankincense essential oil was $50. WOW!

I did decide to buy a bottle of tea tree, lavender and eucalyptus oil from the grocery store. I probably spent about $18 total. To me it was a no brainer. Why spend $50 on ONE little bottle of oil when I can get 3 BIG 15ML bottles of oil for $18. The label said pure essential oil so I thought it was. I thought I was a freaking genius! I was not going to get scammed by the top name brand stuff. I really have never been much of a name brand type of girl anyway.

I brought them home and immediately started using them. I had no education on how to use them. I realize now, that I used them completely wrong. The blog post I read told me nothing about it, they just gave me a recipe and then offered to sell me some. (This is something that I will never do!) I had no idea there was even a wrong way to use them. I had no idea that each oil had its own special healing properties. I did not know that some oils were safe for children and some were not. I.was.naive.

At the same time as I took the placement of this 2 year old boy, my ear piercing just got infected. I remembered reading that I should put tea tree oil on it. So, I did…straight out of the bottle all throughout the day. I ended up with a worse infection than I started with! Thankfully, I was smart enough to try them on myself before I tried them on the little boy.

I used the essential oils multiple times a day. I noticed my earring hole started to get reeeaaallllyyyy itchy. I thought that it was just because my ear was infected.

So, I continued to use them and fought through the aggravating itchiness which was supposed to be “detoxifying” me. After about 3 days, I couldn’t stand it anymore and stopped using them completely.

By day 4 my ear was so inflamed and infected I could barely touch it. I vowed at that moment that I would never again touch another stupid essential oil as long as I lived. I hated them. It took my ear over a month to heal properly. The infection would just not go away.

I actually developed a permanent allergy to specific types of earrings now. If I wear cheap earrings that contain nickel, my ears will become immediately infected again.

3 Mistakes I Made the 1st Time I Used Essential Oils

If only I knew then what I know now…things would have been different. I made 3 major mistakes when using essential oils my first time.

#1 I bought oils from the grocery store that were full of very strong, synthetic chemicals and toxins which caused even more of an infection.

#2 I put them on infected open wounds without any carrier oil.

#3 I did not do enough research to figure out how to use them. The one article I read said just put it on all throughout the day and I blindly obeyed. That person obviously had no idea that you do not put oils on without diluting them. You also don’t put it on constantly like I did. (Yes, there are times you can use essential oils without a carrier oil but NEVER use the grocery store oils…especially neat.)

After this experience, I gave up on essential oils. How sad is that? I just gave up on them. I thought that all those people who were raving about using essential oils were complete idiots. I figured they must have been brain washed. Essential oils are for the hippies. I have always chosen to go the most natural way possible but this was too much for even me. I chalked it up to essential oils causing the placebo effect and didn’t look back. At least I figured this out after only spending $18 instead of the $50 for one bottle. I’ve been more frivolous with $18 than that before so I wasn’t too upset.

What finally helped his diaper rash was an all-natural 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oil diaper rash cream. I won this a few days before I took the little boy in to my care, from a natural mama contest. I saw that it had essential oils in it but I didn’t think that was what helped him. I just couldn’t forgive these oils and I was surely not going to give THEM the credit for this miracle. I was already hesitant enough to use it in the first place. I was desperate though and this little boy needed help.

A while later, as I was still on my journey for a more natural, toxic free home and searching for safer products. I found a peppermint cleanser. It contained essential oils. I was still very angry at those stupid essential oils but I let that all go because it was right around Christmas time and I just couldn’t resist the amazing scent of a peppermint cleaner! It was just so darn Christmasy. I felt full of the Christmas spirit every time I wiped down the counter after dinner. Plus, it was free and everyone needs to clean their counters so…

Ok, so I didn’t hate them anymore but I was still mad at them…until I got sick. I couldn’t breathe at all and went into coughing fits when I laid down, so I had to sleep sitting up.  I decided to try a stupid essential oil roll on I found because I was going to die anyway so I might as well die smelling like sweet peppermint!

Long story short, it actually helped me…like seriously RIGHT AWAY. I could breathe again. I was shocked and was wondering what type of voodoo she put in that thing. I cautiously continued to use it, side eyeing it the whole time just waiting for it to make a move. It didn’t. It helped me for real. I still wasn’t completely convinced due to my overly skeptical nature. So, I kept using it for everything…allergies, congestion, headaches, I put in on my daughter’s chest when she was sick and she loved it. She actually started asking for it before bed each night saying it helped her sleep. My husband also became my guinea pig. I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t crazy like all the other essential oil users. I was mystified when it helped my family too.

Still, I thought we had all fallen victim to this big scam. It had to be the placebo effect, I was just so sure. Every time, I waited for it to rear its ugly little side effect head, but it never did. I was majorly confused to say the least. I didn’t understand why her oils worked and mine were trying to kill me. As I kept looking in to more natural remedies for my family, I kept hearing about these curious little oils.

I decided to try them again but this time I researched heavily. What I found out is that a lot of people actually use them, not just the hippies! I found out that quality matters if you want them to help you and not hurt you. I was excited at hearing all the wonderful things they could do but still very skeptical at the same time. I kept using them and they kept working. It was just that simple. Once I found the real oils, not the perfumes in the grocery store, that is.

It took me realizing this; 2 wisemen gave baby Jesus essential oils. Baby Jesus was given Frankincense and Myrrh. (They were not the same oils we know today because of technology; they were not nearly as powerful.) If it’s good enough for baby Jesus, it’s good enough for me. We are called to give Jesus the best we have just like He did for us. If the wisemen chose essential oils over everything else as the best gift for the creator of the world then they must be amazing!

Now, I am addicted to essential oils. Usually addiction is regarded as a bad thing. In this case, I disagree. Essential oils are good for you if you use them correctly. When you find a brand that is producing pure, pesticide free, 100% unadulterated essential oils then that is a good thing.  There are so many things they can help with. You can use them and create your own products or buy products that already have them in it.

It’s not about a life that is dependent on essential oils. This is not me promoting Young Living Essential Oils. I don’t need to do that, it’s a fact that Young Living Essential Oils sell themselves. Just ask anyone who uses them. This is not about this being one big scam that everyone’s falling for.

It’s about realizing all the harm you do to your family unintentionally and then deciding that you don’t want to do that anymore; you become intentional. I intentionally remove those disgusting cancer causing, brain cell killing, poisons from my home and I replace it with essential oils that can benefit my family. Believe me, I didn’t want to love them (especially when I first looked at the prices.) but I accidently fell in love.  Now THAT is a no brainer.

The bottom line is- do what’s best for you and your family. Make your own decision. If you choose to like what I like then that’s great. If you choose the other side then I respect that you made the decision that you thought was best. Isn’t that what we’re all trying to do anyway? At the end of the day, we all just want what’s best for our families.

There is no right answer, there is no one style. There are different types of people, different parenting and health styles; educate yourself first and foremost then decide. Decide which side you want to be on and then own it. There are no “traitors” when it comes to making the best choice for your family. You can change your mind if you decide that the other option is going to be better. Whatever you do, just do something. You may not be ready to completely change your whole life…at least take 1 step towards a healthier life for your family. Choose to make one simple change that you can transfer to all areas of your life. I chose Young Living and I hope that you choose whatever is best for your family. If you think Young Living might be best for your family-comment down below. I will answer any questions you have without any pressure. Seriously…I want you to choose what YOU think is right. 30 thoughts on “How I Got Started Using Essential Oils”

  1. I totally loved reading your post! I love the way you write, it was funny and I can totally relate. I have recently discovered the power of essential oils with a face oil made of 99.9% with natural ingredients and it contains 3 essential oils. It was so gOOd that I insisted in meeting and interviewing the maker of this oil. It is a man from the countryside in Switzerland, it took him 10 years to create this products because he could find nobody in the country to produce the necessary oils in the clean way he wanted, so he ended up hving his own cultures and his own oils productions. It was so fascinating!

    1. WOW! That is amazing! You are so blessed to have meet such an inspirational man. That is the same thing Young Living discovered…no one wanted to make pure high quality so they did it themselves. Thank you so much for your kind words. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

  2. I love hearing your journey! I got started a few years ago. One of my neighbors is Greek and introduced me to essential oils and their uses. Now I’m hooked!

  3. Interesting lesson on the importance of finding reputable sources on things we don’t know about. I have also just recently started exploring the best and most appropriate uses of essential oils, so this is a good warning post to read.

  4. I have heard some great benefits of Essential Oils but never tried it myself. Do they have any unscented ones? The reason I’m asking is because I have fragrance allergies. Although fruity scents does not bother me.

    1. There are some that have a very mild smell. Some are strong. It just depends what the oil is. Actually, most people who have fragrance allergies are not affected by true essential oils because their fragrance is natural, not created synthetically. Also, the best place to apply essential oils is on the feet, which make it hard to smell. I’d love to give you more information if you would like 🙂

  5. I know when it comes to companies saying that their product actually works! Most of the time these are just the cheesy information to fool the consumers. I remember, in my childhood my Mom and Grandmom use to massage me and my brother with pure organic mustard oil, curd and milk. I would suggest you to read about these Indian Ayurveda oils. It will be really beneficial for your babies. Good luck!

    1. Oh peppermint is great for headaches! I use M-Grain for headaches and it works so much better than peppermint in my opinion since that is what it’s for. I’d love to help you get started with oils if you are interested. I can send you an email if you want.

    1. I was the BIGGEST skeptic in the world. I thought oils were stupid and anything “natural” just didn’t work. I didn’t even want to bother with natural stuff because there were already so many options out there. Boy, I was wrong! I started researching and have never looked back!!

  6. I haven’t delved into essential oils much only because I don’t know which one to use and for what. This post was very insightful and informative – gave me a better idea about essential oils.

    1. I would love to help you if you need more information. There is a lot to learn about essential oils so I know it can be confusing. Once you start you will find it is actually pretty simple.

  7. I started using oils when my youngest got chewed up by fire ants at a park playdate and my neighbor suggested lavender oil. I’d never tried it, so she gave me a roller ball with lavender and a carrier oil that really helped his bites. Ever since then I’ve expanded my collection of oils and use them for so many reasons now.

    1. I am so glad she shared with you. Ahh that is why I love oils so much! You get to help people find relief. 😀 I am so happy for you. We made a lavender spray for this summer for my kids…lol the next thing I knew I was spraying down all the kids in the neighborhood because they had bug bites too XD LOL

  8. I am still a skeptic. I have friends that are obsessed with the oils. I just can’t commit. I also sort of hate the smell.

  9. Very interesting post. I am sorry to hear you had so many difficulties with essential oils at first (though maybe I should put that “in quotes” b/c not the real deal, so to speak?) And that poor baby’s rash! My second had rash about as bad as that – open, bleeding, oozing sores, and she was not from a neglected home, and we STARTED with cloth diapers – we ended up with some equally heavy-duty diaper creams, but honestly, it was an ongoing battle until she outgrew some of her early skin issues, as we were assured she most likely would. (Thank goodness!)

  10. Firstly, you are so wonderful for being a foster mom. I’m so glad you found a product that worked for you and your family.
